* Per runner is our calculation (amount ÷ runners), shown only when the source reports both and the amount is a single-year US total. Amounts outside the US are in local currency. Select a column heading to sort.

Quick answer. Across the 29 documented US school jog-a-thon results in this dataset that include a single-year amount, the median reported total is $19,000, and the middle half reported $10,500 to $75,022. This is a nonrandom sample of publicized events, not a national average. Public elementary runs usually last 15 to 35 minutes; private and Catholic school runs often last an hour.

What 54 documented jog-a-thons show

Everything below comes from the events in the table above. Each one is something a school, PTA, parish or local newspaper published, and each record was checked against its source three times. Where we divide two published figures, we say so ("our calculation"). These events are a nonrandom sample: schools publish good news more readily than bad, so the data almost certainly overrepresents successful fundraisers. Read every figure here as "what documented events reported", never as a national average.

1. Across the 29 documented events with a single-year total, the median is $19,000

$19,000 is the median of the 29 documented US school jog-a-thons in this dataset that published a single-year amount raised. Half of those 29 events reported more and half reported less; the middle half fell between $10,500 and $75,022. The smallest was $1,600 (Ashland Elementary, 2012). The largest was $190,000, an early total that several elementary schools in one district reported together (Oakdale Leader). 20 of the 29 amounts were published before collection closed ("more than", "nearly", "so far"), so those final totals were probably higher. The median leaves out 1 figure that was money pledged but not yet collected, 3 records that state only a goal, and 5 amounts in other currencies.

2. Per runner: $28 to $55

Only 5 events published both an amount and the number of students who ran. Dividing one by the other (our calculation) gives $28 to $55 per runner, with a median of $39. Five events is too few to call this a benchmark. Use it as a sanity check on your own goal, and work your real numbers in the pledge planner.

3. Published goals were usually met

8 events reported both a goal and an actual result, and 8 of them met or beat it, such as St. James-Holy Redeemer (nearly $21,000 against $10,000) and Rogers Adventist School ($80,500 against $40,000). Schools are more likely to announce a goal they hit, so this says more about how goals get publicized than about how often goals are met.

4. Public elementary runs are short; private and Catholic runs are long

21 events reported how long students ran, from 15 to 120 minutes (median 30). 11 of 13 public elementary events ran 15 to 35 minutes, usually class by class during the school day. All 6 private and Catholic school events that reported a length ran 60 minutes or more. If you plan a long run for young children, expect much more walking in the second half; the sample schedules by grade show shorter blocks.

5. Per-lap pledges are the norm

16 sources described how donors could give. All 16 offered per-lap pledges, and 9 of them also offered a flat gift. None described a flat-only event, which is why setting a per-lap cap matters so much.

6. Laps and pace in real events

5 events published total laps and the number of runners, giving averages of 12 to 21 laps per runner (our calculation). Two also published lap length and run time, which lets us compare real pace with the defaults in our lap calculator:

EventRunners and runAverage pace (our calculation)Lap calculator default
Mountain Avenue Elementary (2009)575 K–5 students, 20 min, 1/10-mile loop, 10,345 laps in totalabout 145 m per minuteTypical 90 (K–2) to 110 (3–5); high 120 to 150
St. Cecilia Catholic School (2017)90 K–8 students, 60 min, 1/4-mile laps, 1,236 laps in totalabout 92 m per minuteTypical 90 to 125

In a short 20-minute block, children ran close to the calculator's "high" pace; over an hour, the average settled below "typical". (Mountain Avenue's article reports an 18.9-lap average, while its own totals divide to 18.0; we use the totals.) The fastest students in the dataset covered 161 to 201 meters a minute, led by a 7th grader with 57 eighth-mile laps in an hour at St. Thomas More Academy. Two takeaways: for short runs, set pledge caps and print lap cards for counts near the calculator's high estimate, and size the counting checkpoint for the high pace.

7. Many jog-a-thons are long-running traditions

Holy Family School has held its jog-a-thon since 1980, Gemini Elementary held its 35th in 2024, Parkside Elementary has run one since 1993, and East Omak Elementary found an event shirt from 1981.

8. Where the money goes

Reported uses cluster around what school budgets rarely cover: field trips and buses, playground and PE equipment, classroom technology, assemblies, and art and science programs. A few schools named one big purchase, such as a school transit vehicle. Naming one concrete purchase is also the strongest line in a parent letter.

9. "Jog-a-thon" is mostly a western term

30 of the 47 US events in the dataset are in western states, even though we searched nationwide. Schools elsewhere often call a similar event a fun run or walk-a-thon. Outside the US, "jogathon" is common in Malaysia, the source of 4 events here. For naming advice, see jog-a-thon vs. run-a-thon vs. lap-a-thon.

Using these numbers for your own goal

  1. Start from your own runners, not from the median. Multiply the students you expect to run by a per-runner figure you can defend for your school, then check it against similar schools in the table.
  2. Filter for schools like yours. Use the type, year and "must report" filters above, and compare with events of similar size.
  3. Set a goal you can beat. The schools above that hit their goals set them conservatively and added a stretch goal mid-campaign.
  4. Plan laps and caps from real pace. For short runs, plan around the lap calculator's high estimate and set per-lap caps from it.

How every record was checked

Each record went through three separate checks. A researcher found the event in a public source and recorded only what the source states. A second researcher reopened the source and checked every field, which corrected 12 records and removed 2. In a final pass on October 19, 2026, a third check reopened every source again: 51 records matched, 3 were corrected, and 0 could not be checked. 54 of 54 sources loaded (7 through a redirect); 0 needed an archive copy or could not be opened. Corrections included a 13-year total that had been entered as one year, an amount that belonged to the previous year's event, and a "more than $54,000" that turned out to be money pledged, not collected.

Label in the tableWhat it means
Final resultThe source reports the amount as the event's total (14 records).
Early resultReported before collection closed, or as "more than" or "nearly" (20 records). The final total was probably higher.
Pledged, not yet collectedMoney promised by donors, not money received (1 record). Excluded from the median.
Goal onlyThe source states a goal but no result (3 records). A goal is never shown as an amount raised.
Source checked / Corrected after source checkThe source was reopened in the final pass and every field matched, or was corrected to match.

Methodology

  • Inclusion. The source calls the event a jog-a-thon or jogathon and reports at least two concrete facts: amount, goal, runners, laps, distance, run time, lap length, pledge amounts, or what the money paid for.
  • Exclusions. Events described only on fundraising companies' websites or press releases; events whose figures could not be tied to one dated event (2 removed on the second check); and run-a-thons, fun runs or lap-a-thons not called a jog-a-thon.
  • Sources. Local news (28), school, PTA or district websites (16), school-submitted newspaper articles (4), church or parish sites (5) and other (1). Several are written by the school itself, which the record notes.
  • No estimates in the data. Numbers are recorded as published. "More than $20,000" is entered as $20,000 and labeled an early result. Calculated columns (per runner, average laps, pace) appear only when the source publishes both inputs.
  • Missing data. Most sources report only some fields: 35 of 54 records report an amount, 16 a participant count, 12 total laps and 21 a run length. Blank means "not published", never zero.
  • How the summary figures are calculated. The median uses US events whose amount is a final or early single-year result in dollars (29 events). Quartiles use the standard exclusive method. Per-runner figures divide a single-year US amount by a reported count of students who ran; enrollment counts are not used.
  • Currencies. Amounts outside the US stay in local currency and are left out of every dollar figure.
  • Children's privacy. We never record a child's name, even when a source prints it.

What this data can't tell you

These are gross totals: no source reported costs, so none of these figures is what a school kept. The sample is nonrandom and leans toward successful, publicized events, public elementary schools, and western states. 54 events is a starting point, not a census. For a planning estimate built from your own numbers, use the fundraising goal guide, and read the five in-depth case studies for what made individual events work. Everything else about running the event is in the jog-a-thon planning guide.

Changelog

  • October 19, 2026 (v1.2). Rancho Santa Gertrudes Elementary (2017): two live district articles give different amounts ($2,500 and over $1,500) and dates (April 27, 28 and 29). The amount is no longer recorded and the date is kept to April 2017. Median recalculated to $19,000 from 29 events; per-runner figures now come from 5 events.
  • October 19, 2026 (v1.1). Final verification pass: every source reopened; 3 records corrected; one pledged amount reclassified and removed from the median. Median recalculated to $17,000 from 30 events. Added year, participant-data and verification filters, money-figure labels, archive and limitation notes, and a data dictionary.
  • October 19, 2026 (v1.0). First release: 54 events from 18 states and 5 countries, 2009–2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the median amount in this jog-a-thon dataset?

$19,000, which is the median of the 29 documented US school jog-a-thons in this dataset that published a single-year amount raised. Because schools publicize successful events more often, treat it as a reference point from documented events, not as what a typical jog-a-thon raises.

How was each jog-a-thon record verified?

Each record was taken only from a public source and then checked against that source three separate times. The table shows whether each amount is a final result, an early result or pledged money, and links to the source.

How many laps do kids run at a jog-a-thon?

Schools that published totals averaged 12 to 21 laps per runner. Lap counts depend on loop length and run time, so estimate your own with the lap calculator.

Can I reuse this jog-a-thon data?
