Quick answer. This is a free, searchable set of fun run results: 59 results from 54 fun run fundraisers documented by schools, PTAs, nonprofits and local news, each linked to its source and checked three times. Filter it by format, organizer, year and the figures reported, or download the CSV. Among the 37 US results with a single-year dollar total, the median reported total is $25,000. These are published results, which lean toward successful events and are mostly gross, so they are not a representative average or a forecast for your event.
Read this first: what these numbers are, and what they are not.
- Published results, not a representative sample. Schools and newspapers mostly report events that went well, so successful and larger runs are overrepresented. Nothing here is an average for fun runs in general.
- Mostly gross, not profit. Only 5 of the 59 sources mention costs or net proceeds, so most totals are before shirts, permits, card fees or any provider's share.
- Some figures are floors or early counts. Many say "more than" or were published before collection closed.
- Not a forecast for your event. To estimate yours, use your own turnout, giving and costs in the fun run profit calculator.

What 59 documented fun run results show
Everything below is computed from the 59 results in the table, which cover 54 distinct events (a few events appear for more than one year). Each result was reported publicly by a school, PTA, district, nonprofit or local newspaper, and each record links to that source. This is a collection of publicized events, not a survey, so read the figures as "what documented events reported", never as a national average.
1. Across 37 US results with a single-year total, the median published total is $25,000
$25,000 is the median of the 37 documented US fun run results in this dataset that published a single-year total in dollars (from 32 distinct events; a few events appear for more than one year). The middle half reported between $13,500 and $32,896. The smallest was $3,960 (First annual fall fun run (Orcas Island elementary school), 2024; Islands' Sounder) and the largest $83,226 (Princeton Elementary annual fun run, 2023; The Macomb Daily (via PressReader)). 5 of the 37 amounts were published before collection closed ("so far", "as of"), so those final totals were probably higher. Many sources say "more than" or "over", which makes their figures floors, not exact totals.
The median leaves out amounts in other currencies (AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP, MYR, NZD, ZAR), records that state only a goal, a multi-year running total, and events where sources disagree on the amount. Those records stay in the table with their labels.
2. School lap runs and route runs report different totals
The 14 US lap-based school fun runs with a single-year dollar total have a median of $27,139. The 7 US route runs (1 mile, 5K and similar distances, usually open to the community) have a median of $9,000. Both groups are small, and 4 of the 7 route runs were in their first three years, so treat the gap as a reason to look closer, not a rule. Lap runs ask every student to collect donations; route runs lean more on entry fees and sponsors, and the published totals reflect that.
3. Per-participant figures are rare
Only 4 results published both a dollar amount and a count of people who took part (rather than school enrollment or spectators). Dividing one by the other (our calculation) gives $15 to $68.89 per participant. That is far too few for a benchmark; plug your own numbers into the profit calculator linked at the top of this page instead.
4. Costs and fees are almost never published
Only 5 of 59 sources say anything about costs or net proceeds, and only 3 state a registration fee. Most published totals are gross: they do not subtract shirts, prizes, permits or any outside company's share. 11 of the 59 sources mention an outside fun run company or online giving platform, whether running the event, hosting donations or appearing in the event name; where a company ran the event, the published total may be before its share. Our fun run budget guide walks through the costs a total leaves out.
5. Most published goals were met
7 US results published both a goal and a result in dollars, and 7 of them met or beat the goal. Counting every country, 8 of 10 did. Schools tend to announce goals they reach, so this says more about what gets published than about how often fun runs hit their targets.
Fun run results by format and organizer
Counts of all records, how many report a US single-year dollar total, and the median of those totals where there are at least three.
| Format | Records | US $ totals | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lap-based (school) | 15 | 14 | $27,139 |
| Mixed | 5 | 4 | $25,000 |
| Not stated | 22 | 12 | $24,500 |
| Route (1 mile to 5K and similar) | 16 | 7 | $9,000 |
| Virtual | 1 | 0 | too few |
| Organizer | Records | US $ totals | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community or nonprofit | 10 | 4 | $20,500 |
| Other | 4 | 1 | too few |
| Private or Catholic school | 9 | 5 | $32,000 |
| Public school or PTA/PTO | 36 | 27 | $21,500 |
Sponsors show up often: 18 of the 59 sources mention business sponsors, from a few shirt sponsors to more than 30 local businesses. If your event can sell shirt-back space, build tiers with the sponsorship calculator.
How to use this fun run data
- Set a goal from your own numbers. Use the median as a sanity check, not a target. The how much does a fun run raise guide shows the formula and the levers.
- Filter to events like yours. Use the format and organizer filters above: a first-year community 5K and a K-5 school lap run are different events.
- Read the labels. "Early result" means the source published before collection closed. "Limitations" under each source says what the article does not establish.
- Read the stories. The fun run case studies go deeper on five events from this table.
Methodology
- Inclusion. An event qualifies if a public source calls it a fun run (including "family fun run" and similar), says it raised money, and reports at least one figure: an amount, a participant count, a goal or a fee. Years 2011–2026.
- Sources. School, PTA and district websites and newsletters, nonprofit pages and local news. No fundraising company's own website is used as a source.
- Exclusions. 55 candidates were left out, each with a recorded reason: no figure, no year, a pre-event progress post, not called a fun run, an unreadable source, or a source that is a fundraising company's page.
- Verification. Every source was opened during collection and again in two later checks. In the final check each recorded field was compared against the source: 33 records matched, 26 were corrected, and 0 could not be fully confirmed and are labeled.
- Amount labels. Final result, early result (published before collection closed), goal only, multi-year total. Goals are never treated as results. Where two sources disagree, the amount is left blank and both figures are noted.
- Calculations. The median and quartiles use US single-year dollar results only (exclusive quartile method). Per-participant figures divide such an amount by a stated count of people who took part; enrollment and spectator counts are never used.
- Privacy. No child's name is recorded, even when a source prints it. Event names that included a fundraising company's brand are neutralized.
What this fun run data can't tell you
These are mostly gross totals from successful, publicized events. Schools that had a disappointing year rarely post about it, so the sample leans high. Of the 41 US results, 16 are from the Northeast and 12 from the South, and most organizers are elementary schools and their PTAs. 54 events is a starting point, not a census. For planning, start from your own enrollment, costs and fundraising model in the fun run fundraiser guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a fun run raise on average?
No reliable national average exists. In this dataset, the median of the 37 documented US fun run results in this dataset that published a single-year total in dollars (from 32 distinct events; a few events appear for more than one year) is $25,000. Publicized events lean toward successful ones, so plan from your own numbers.
Do school lap fun runs raise more than community 5K fun runs?
In this dataset, US lap-based school runs have a median of $27,139 (14 results) and US route runs $9,000 (7 results). Both groups are small, so treat the difference as a pattern to check, not a rule.
Are these totals net of costs?
Almost never. Only 5 of 59 sources mention costs or net proceeds. Treat the amounts as gross totals before shirts, prizes, permits and any outside company's share.
Can I use this fun run data in an article or presentation?
Yes. Cite Walk-A-Thon.com's Fun Run Results Database with the version and link, and link to the original source for any single event you mention.
How do I add a fun run to the database?
Send a link to a public article or school page about the event to hello@walk-a-thon.com. We add events only from public sources and run the same checks on every record.
