Quick answer. Northwestern University Dance Marathon (NUDM) cut its event from 30 hours to 15 for its 50th year in 2024, citing new energy and more first-year participation, and kept that length through 2025 and 2026. Reported totals were $342,138, $191,827 and $218,774, each for a different beneficiary. In 2026 a storm forced the tent event indoors within its first hour. The lessons are about format and contingency planning, not totals a school dance-a-thon can expect.
The program: a 50-year student dance marathon with a rotating beneficiary
Northwestern University Dance Marathon (NUDM) is a student-run philanthropy in Evanston, Illinois, that began in 1975. It is independent of the hospital-network dance marathon programs: per FOX 32 Chicago (April 3, 2025), it has supported more than 45 organizations since it started, and the primary beneficiary changes from year to year. A share also goes to the Evanston Community Foundation, which Northwestern's 2025 news story calls a 28-year tradition; the split isn't published.
Three straight years of coverage let us watch one program change its format, change venues twice and handle a storm in the middle of the night. That makes it a useful study in format decisions even for organizers working at a tiny fraction of this scale.
Three years, two venues, one 15-hour dance marathon format
| Year | Length and hours | Venue | Primary beneficiary | Reported total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 (50th) | 15 hours, cut from 30 | Welsh-Ryan Arena | Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana | $342,138 |
| 2025 (NUDM 51) | 15 hours, 6 p.m. Fri–9 a.m. Sat | Welsh-Ryan Arena | Chicago HOPES for Kids | $191,827 |
| 2026 (NUDM 52) | 15 hours, 9 p.m. Fri–noon Sat | Tent on Cohen Lawn | Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation | $218,774 |
None of the sources says whether these figures are gross or net. The 2024 exact figure comes from FOX 32's 2025 article; Northwestern's own 2024 story says "more than $342,000 in donations." Cumulative figures (more than $20 million per Northwestern in 2024, over $23 million per FOX 32 in 2025) are running totals since 1975 and shouldn't be compared with single-year numbers.
The 2025 total fell from the year before. No source explains why, and with a different beneficiary each year there are too many moving parts to guess, so we don't.
The format change: cutting the event from 30 hours to 15
For its 50th year, NUDM cut the event in half, from 30 hours to 15, and moved it to after spring break. It also moved from Norris University Center to Welsh-Ryan Arena because of planned construction near Norris. Northwestern reports that organizers wanted to generate new excitement and participation, that they saw new energy around the event, and that participation among first-year students went up.
Length is something organizers choose, and a shorter event can draw more people. A shorter event is easier to staff, easier to supervise and easier for newcomers to try. NUDM kept the 15-hour length in 2025 and 2026, though the later sources don't discuss the decision. For school events the same logic runs at a smaller scale: a 45-minute class block or a two-hour evening dance can be the right length on purpose. Our sample dance-a-thon schedules by age and format show how length changes the run of show.
The 2026 storm: why a minute-by-minute schedule and a backup room matter
In 2026 NUDM went back to its original home, a large tent on Norris' Cohen Lawn, after two years at the arena. According to The Daily Northwestern (April 6, 2026), stormy weather less than an hour in forced the whole event to move indoors to Norris' Louis Room. Dancers were back in the tent by sunrise Saturday. The paper doesn't say how long they stayed inside or how the move was managed.
What it does say: leaders worked from a six-page, minute-by-minute schedule covering every performance and transition, and they had to stay flexible to move everyone quickly and keep participants safe. Food and hydration were top priorities, including food for participants observing Passover.
The National Weather Service advises organizers of outdoor activities to have a lightning safety plan and follow it without exception, and says tents and rain shelters are not safe shelter. Any dance-a-thon under a tent or outdoors needs a named indoor fallback room, a decision-maker and a way to move people before the first storm cell arrives. Our dance-a-thon safety guide covers how to build that into the school or venue emergency plan.
Where the four sources differ, and what none of them says
We re-read all four sources on October 20, 2026. Participant counts appear only for 2025, and the sources differ: FOX 32 says more than 600 dancers and committee members, Northwestern says nearly 600 students. No source gives costs, net proceeds, per-dancer minimums, how beneficiaries are chosen or how the 2026 indoor move was staffed.
Planning lessons for any long event
NUDM's totals don't transfer to a short school dance-a-thon. They come from a year-round student organization running since 1975, a 15-hour event and hundreds of participants, and college results in our results database sit on a different scale from school ones. What transfers is the planning:
- Pick length for your participants, then hold it. NUDM halved its event and kept the new length for the next two years.
- Write the run of show down to the transition. The session planner produces a clock-time schedule you can print.
- Name a fallback room for any tent or outdoor setup and decide in advance who calls the move.
- Plan food and water for the whole night, including dietary and religious needs.
