Among 31 K–12 school and PTA results with a single-year dollar total, the median is $12,000; college dance marathons are a different scale. Published results lean toward successful events and are mostly unlabeled gross totals, so they're context, not a forecast.

Published results are not a representative sample. Schools, universities and newspapers mostly write about events that went well, so these figures lean high. Almost none say whether a total is gross or net (1 of 149 records do), several are floors ("more than…"), and dance marathon totals come from year-round student programs that have little in common with a two-hour school dance-a-thon. Use them as context, then plan from your own numbers in the dance-a-thon fundraising calculator.

What 149 documented dance-a-thon and dance marathon results show
The table holds 149 event-year records from 124 distinct events, 2008–2026, reported by schools, PTAs, school districts, nonprofits, universities, hospital foundations and local news in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Every record links to its public source, and every source was opened twice: once when the record was collected and again by an independent checker who compared each field with the page.
1. School and PTA dance-a-thons: a median of $12,000
$12,000 is the median of the 31 K–12 school and PTA/PTO results in this database that published a single-year total in US dollars (from 27 distinct events). The middle half reported between $5,000 and $25,000. The smallest was $408 (Elementary dance-a-thon, year not stated; The Monroe Times) and the largest $94,000 (Peters Township Middle School dance-a-thon (school-run, THON-style), 2023; The Almanac). For elementary schools and PTAs alone the median of 20 results is $13,000; for middle schools, $11,804 from 9 results, a group that includes several long or overnight events. 6 more K–12 results are in Canadian dollars and are left out of these medians.
2. Community, nonprofit, church and studio events: few published totals
Only 7 of the 26 community records publish a single-year total in US dollars; their median is $31,000. Many community pages describe the format in detail and never publish a final number, or post a running total during the event. That's too few results for a benchmark.
3. Dance marathons are a different scale
High school dance marathons, which usually fundraise for months before a long event, report a median of $55,826 across 25 results (middle half $27,473–$143,050). College dance marathons report a median of $820,822 across 36 results, from $2,261 at the small end to $18,841,727 for the largest program. A handful of very large programs pull those numbers up, and none of them tells a school what a short dance-a-thon will raise. The dance marathon guide explains how the model works.
4. How long documented events ran

School-day elementary events usually give each class a short block in the gym, so their lengths are per session, not for the whole day. The dance-a-thon schedule guide turns these into sample run-of-show plans.
5. Flat pledges are the norm at school events
Of the 41 K–12 records that describe how money was raised, 17 mention flat donations or sponsorships, 7 mention an entry fee, ticket or wristband, and 1 mentions per-minute pledges. Per-song and per-hour pledging appear rarely in published school results. The pledges guide compares the models.
6. Per-dancer figures are rare
Only 7 school and PTA results state both a total and a count of students who took part (not enrollment). Dividing one by the other (our calculation) gives $8 to $376 per dancer, with a median of $62. That's far too few for a benchmark.
How to use this dance-a-thon data
- Compare like with like. Filter by group before looking at any total. A 30-minute kindergarten block and a 46-hour college marathon are different events.
- Set your goal from your own math. The how much does a dance-a-thon raise guide shows the formula and the levers; use the medians here only as a sanity check.
- Read the labels. "Floor" means the source said "more than"; "running total" means the figure was posted before collection closed; "cumulative" means more than one year added together.
- Read the stories. The dance-a-thon case studies go deeper on 15 events from this table.
Methodology
- Inclusion. A public source calls the event a dance-a-thon, danceathon, dance marathon or Mini-THON, says it raised money, and reports at least one useful fact: an amount, a goal, a length, a participant count or a fundraising method.
- Sources. School, PTA, district, university, nonprofit and hospital-foundation pages and local or student news. No fundraising company's own page is used as a source.
- Verification. 99 records matched their source field by field on the second check, 50 were corrected, and 0 remain unverified. Corrections are logged in the CSV.
- Amount labels. 107 totals don't say gross or net; 1 is net; 3 are multi-year totals; 3 are running totals; 5 are goals only. 17 amounts are floors. Goals, running totals and multi-year totals never enter a median.
- Calculations. Medians and quartiles use single-year US-dollar results only (exclusive quartile method), computed separately for each group.
- Exclusions. 88 candidates were left out with a recorded reason, most often no usable figure, an out-of-scope event, a page that wouldn't load, or a page that sent readers to a fundraising company.
- Privacy. No child is named. Event names that included a fundraising company's brand are neutralized.
What this dance-a-thon data can't tell you
Most of these are gross totals from successful, publicized events, so the sample leans high, and costs are almost never published. The school records skew toward elementary schools in the Northeast, the Midwest and Canada, and the dance marathon records toward the largest programs, which publish the most. 124 events is a starting point, not a census. No reliable national average exists. In this database, the median of the 31 K–12 school and PTA/PTO results in this database that published a single-year total in US dollars is $12,000. Publicized events lean toward successful ones, so plan from your own numbers.
Why are dance marathon totals so much higher?
Dance marathons are year-round student philanthropy programs with committees, months of fundraising and a long culminating event, often benefiting a children's hospital. A short school dance-a-thon raises money over a few weeks, so the totals don't compare.
Are these totals net of costs?
Almost never stated. Only 1 of 149 records say whether the figure is gross or net, so treat most amounts as totals before DJ, shirts, prizes and fees.
